Volz bill allowing counties to contract with each other signed into law

On Monday, Gov. Jay Inslee signed into law a bill sponsored by Rep. Mike Volz to allow county treasurers throughout the state to enter into contracts with one another.

House Bill 2072 authorizes county treasurers to contract with each other, the state treasurer, or both, for services. Volz said counties often have a mutual interest in partnering with each other for certain, necessary services, such as banking and technology projects.

“Though this bill applies to all county treasurers, it will particularly benefit Eastern Washington communities. Allowing larger counties to enter financial contracts with some of our smaller counties would be a boon for small towns and geographically dispersed counties, and would allow for greater local flexibility,” said Volz, R-Spokane. “The more who enter a contract, the greater your negotiating power, which invariably leads to better services at better prices.”

The bill takes effect later this year.
