Mike Volz sworn in as 6th District representative

Mike Volz, R-Spokane, was sworn in Monday as the new state representative for the 6th Legislative District. Volz joins an incoming group of eight new House Republicans to kick off the 2017 legislative session, which also began Monday.

“This community has been a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family, and I’m looking forward to giving back as I serve in the state House of Representatives,” said Volz. “As I traveled throughout the district these past few months, it seems the number one issue on peoples’ minds is the economy. That’s why it’s critical lawmakers support solutions that encourage job growth and exercise fiscal responsibility in the budgeting process.”

Volz, a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), is the Chief Deputy Treasurer for Spokane County. As one of the only CPA’s in the state Legislature, Volz looks forward to working on reforms that will protect taxpayers and require state government to live within its means.

“This is a critical year for our state,” said Volz. “With the start of a new biennium, lawmakers must ensure that we not only pass a budget that looks ahead, but one that plans ahead.”

Volz will serve on the House Appropriations and Education committees, which cover issues relating to the state operating budget and K-12 education policy, respectively. He will also serve on the House State Government Committee, which considers issues relating to state agency rulemaking, information technology systems and security, campaign finance, public disclosure and ethics in government.

He replaces former Rep. Kevin Parker, R-Spokane, who announced in May 2016 he would not run for re-election to his seat.

The 2017 legislative session is scheduled to adjourn in 105 days.
